FMCSA IEP & DRIVER GUIDE | Print |  E-mail

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is underway with implementation of the new Intermodal Equipment Ruling. The basis for this provision is to increase the number of safe , roadable chassis placed for use within the Ports.

Both drivers and IEP's (Intermodal Equipment Providers) share responsibility with compliance. This ruling has the ability to increase available equipment and reduce drayage times by eliminating frequent trips to M&R. To be effective, the port trucking community must encourage enforcement and oversee IEP compliance.

  • Violations should be reported by calling the Safety Violation Hotline @ (888) DOT-SAFT or by visiting http://nccdb.fmcsa.dot.gov. Please, be responsible and prohibit frivolous calls!

  • FMCSA Interprets chassis placed in pools and made available for driver use as being required to be roadable.

For reference to the Port of Virginia, the IEP is HRCP2 (Hampton Roads Chassis Pool) which is operated by Virginia Intermodal Management.  VIM is a subsidiary of Virginia International Terminals.
